“The thing people fear the most isn’t dying, it’s being forgotten”
Battle Royale is, in my opinion one of the best films ever made. A film that stands up to repeat viewings. A work of genius & near perfection. Battle Royale is simply outstanding. Battle Royale 2 is the complete opposite. An utter car crash of a movie. From beginning to end this movie has no redeeming features. If you could look up the phrase ” total disaster” in the dictionary, there would be a picture of this movie’s poster in the definition. I have seen this film 4 or 5 times (in the deluded hope that it wasn’t as bad as I first thought, it is) & each time I am left staggered at just how much of a complete fuck up it truly is. There are spoilers for the first movie in this review.
The ludicrous bollocks that masquerades as a plot is that after the failure of the original Battle Royale act, the survivors of the Battles form a terrorist group that declares war on the adults! This group is led by Shuya Nanahara (from the first movie) & calls itself “The Wild Seven” In retaliation at several bombings by the group, the government pass the BRII act. This time they get a group of drop-outs, trouble makers & delinquents. They are fitted with neck collars & told they will be storming the island stronghold of The Wild Seven. Among the class is Shiori Kitano, daughter of Kitano the teacher from the original film killed by Shuya & Noriko.
I’m not even going to mention the teacher, his character is so pathetic, clichéd & lacks any semblance of logic to his actions. Then again logic is sorely lacking from this movie. In another ridiculous plot development, the new class are paired up before being fitted with neck collars. If one of the pair is killed or moves too far away from his/her partner, both collars are detonated! Why? What possible logic is there in this? One of the biggest strengths of the first film was the depth of characterisation, the human element was very evident & powerful. Quite frankly I didn’t give a flying fuck about any of the characters in this movie, whether they lived or died just didn’t matter. Apart from Shiori Kitano, none of the new characters is given any back story & because of this become just faceless fodder. To be honest I’m not going to truly go into depth with the numerous flaws in this movie. I’m sure if you have read this far you pretty much know how much I think this movie sucks. It’s not even like I’m being hard to please. I loved the first movie, all they had to do was give me more of the same & I would have been quite happy.
An unmitigated disaster of a movie, a truly monumental pile of bollocks. I would rather piss glass than sit through this movie again. An insult to the genius of the first film. Avoid at all costs.
