“Eko Eko Azaraku”
Eko Eko Azarak or to give the movie its English title Wizard Of Darkness is the first part of a trilogy of movies about a young witch Misa Kuroi. Misa is transferred to schools when she is needed to fight evil & witchcraft. Now at this point you may be thinking Japanese Buffy clone, well you would be wrong. The closest comparison in western cinema & TV would be the movie 5ive Girls.
The movie opens with a woman running through the streets in sheer terror, this is intercut with some red robed figures chanting. One of them holds a voodoo doll style effigy & brings a dagger down onto the head of the doll. At that moment an iron girder falls from a roof, completely obliterating the woman’s head. It turns out the woman is the fifth person to die in a sequence, which if you join the areas where they died on a map it forms a pentagram. In the center of this pentagram is a school. It is at this school Misa Kuroi transfers to, that she will battle the forces of evil. There is a plot to bring about the return of Lucifer & 13 sacrifices are needed. It’s not long before Misa is trapped in the school with 12 fellow students.
Could have been, might have been, should have been, wasn’t! This movie is dreadful, God only knows how it spawned two sequels. The first & biggest problem with this movie is Misa the movie’s heroine. Basically she is crap. She has twelve students with her, all marked for death. How many does she save? 5? 3? 1? NONE! Not a single one. As heroines goes she is utterly useless. Her character is also just dull, I mean seriously Coldplay dull! The big reveal on who is trying to bring back Lucifer is so transparent after about 15 minutes of the movie. One of the female students is having an affair with her female teacher, why is this? Is it relevent to the plot? Nope it’s there purely for a gratuitous lesbian sex scene. Not that I’m against a lesbian sex scene, quite the opposite but there is no attempt whatsoever to place any relevance on this. Virtually everything about this movie is awful. Plodding script, bad acting, wooden dialogue, just awful. The only thing in its favour are a few nicely done gore scenes. But this falls way short of saving this movie.
In closing I would rather suck the farts out of roadkill than watch this movie again. Lucifer will be skiing to work before I sit down to watch the sequels. Avoid this mess of a film.
